Tobin, Jon

Although he was born in Toronto, Jon Tobin grew up in Kenabeek, Ontario, about 100 miles north of North Bay and 20 miles from the Quebec border. In that community, he learned to appreciate, even to emulate, his neighbours' careful and skilful making of objects that had a spiritual and practical application to their everyday lives.

Tobin attended the University of Waterloo's Integrated Studies program, where he studied Fine Art and Canadian Literature. In the often dangerous setting of a northern Ontario village, Jon Tobin began to look deep into what might be called the spirit of place. His paintings of Toronto are timeless, done when he returned to Toronto as an adult. He now lives and works in Kitchener, where he has a studio in the Lang Tannery Building.
